Platos The Human Soul Essays - Socratic Dialogues,

Plato's The Human Soul Plato was perhaps one of the most intriguing minds of his time. His works influenced many of today's great minds. One of his greatest works was his Five Dialogues. The Five Dialogues include: Euthyphro; Apology; Crito; Meno; and Phaedo. Of the five books, Phaedo is arguable the most captivating. Phaedo is an account of the ideas of the great philosopher, Socrates. In Phaedo, Socrates discusses many controversial ideas such as philosophical method, death, the true philosopher, and many other ideas as well. Socrates also discusses the nature of the soul in Phaedo. The nature of the soul is one of the main points of Plato's dialogues. It is also important to understand the soul's role in acquiring philosophical knowledge. Both of these ideas are discussed in great detail in Phaedo. Socrates starts describing the nature of the soul by separating it from the body. Socrates explains that in order to truly perceive that which is true we must separate the soul from the body. He states: ?And indeed the soul reasons best when none of these senses troubles it, neither hearing nor sight, nor pain nor pleasure, but when it is most by itself, taking leave of the body and as far as possible having no contact wit it in its search for reality.? Socrates tells us that the body and the senses only distort the soul's perception of reality. In order to truly understand reality we must transcend our body and senses. Our senses can mislead us. Socrates claims ?the body confuses the soul and does not allow it to acquire truth and wisdom?. For example: just because what one might see looks like a plant, it might not necessary be a plant. A plant is a living thing. What we see might simply be a plastic replica. In order to acquire true knowledge we must separate our soul from our bodies. Socrates says: ?The body keeps us busy in a thousand different ways because of its need for nurture? It fills us with wants, desires, fears, al sorts of illusions and much nonsense, so that, as it said, in truth and in fact no thought of any kind ever comes to us from the body. Only the body and its desires cause war, civil discord and battles, for all wars are due to the desire to acquire wealth, and it is the body and the care of it, to which we are we are enslaved, which compel us to acquire wealth, and all this makes us too busy to practise philosophy.? All of this is very true. The body's needs and desires cause us to make war. Also due to these needs the body is enslaved. Therefore the body's needs interfere with the soul's search for true wisdom. This makes perfect sense. Due to our body's needs and desires we make war. Often times the main reason for war is the desire for money or power. These desires blind us from true wisdom and cause us to misinterpret things. Socrates ideology about the need for the seperation between body and soul is completely valid based on his reasoning. Socrates claims that the soul is immortal. Socrates reasons this by saying: ?We recall in ancient theory that souls arriving there (the underworld) come from here, and then again that they arrive here and are born here from the dead. If that is true, that the living come back from the dead, then surely our souls must exist there, for they could not come back if they did not exist, and this is sufficient proof that these things are so if it truly appears that the living never come from any other source than the dead.? By this Socrates reasons that the soul is immortal and upon death it transcends the body. After death the soul and body are separated and the soul can achieve true wisdom. The above argument holds true, based on the idea that something can just not be instantly created. Socrates explains that the soul cannot just be formed it must come from somewhere. It must have an origin. Socrates, therefore, claims that the soul never dies, it simply transcends the body after death and then later it becomes

The Removalists essays

The Removalists essays The Removalists, written by David Williamson, is a very interesting play set in the seventies. The basic plot is two sisters walk into the police station to complain about one sister being physically abused by her husband. The to police officers then help her move out but not before beating her husband quite severely. In the end, one of the police officers loses control and beats the husband to death, although unintentionally. Now, the question posed by this essay is whether, given the chance, I would create three dimensional characters on stage or stereotypically Australian characters. Having given it some thought, I believe that the most effective way to portray these characters is hide a deep character with a thin layer of superficial, Australian stereotype on the top. To put it simply, I would start the play by making the audience believe that there is not much substance to the characters, but as the play proceeds, a new layer is slowly revealed to expose a greater personality. The following body of text will give examples as to why I believe this. The first example I shall give is Simmonds. Simmonds is one of the police officers who helps move Fiona (the sister who was beaten), out of her apartment. Simmonds is the most senior of the two policeman in this play. He is a sergeant and is married with two children. On the surface, he looks like your typical bullying police officer. I'm not saying he isn't, but there is more to this character then meets the eye. He may preach that adultery is wrong but only when he wants to get that moral advantage over those around him. This particular trait means he has set quite large double standards. Double standards because originally he had ulterior motives for helping the two women but when he realised that Kate (the sister to Fiona) wasn't interested in sleeping with him he goes off at her about being an adulterer. This is very hypocritical. This makes him sound stereotypical, and on th ...

Analysis of Badinerie by J.S Bach

The piece Badinage is in a light mood and structured in the Binary Form. It is cast in swift 2/4 meter beginning on the upbeat or musicians. This piece was originally written for a Chamber Orchestra and a solo flute. The piece starts In B minor and played In allegro tempo throughout. Badinage start with a mess forte dynamic marking meaning moderately loud with motive A in the pickup bar at the beginning and motive B starts on the second beat in bar two to bar 3. The Antecedent ranges from the beginning of the USIA to the first beat of bar four, which ends on a Perfect Authentic Cadence. The Consequent started on the second beat of bar for four to the first beat of bar ten, which ended on an Imperfect Cadence a one to a five suspended two chord In second inversion. They are long phrases throughout the duration of the piece. In the first five bars the bass line plays a Bass Continuo style in Baroque music, however in modern day it is called a Walking Bass style. In bars six to ten the melody line plays a similar rhythm that the bass was playing in the first five bars and the ass line plays a similar rhythm to what the melody line was playing. The second beat of bar 10 the dynamic marking changes to forte meaning loud which is the beginning of the phrase extension and sequential progression to bar 16. There Is a great build up in this phrase with a mess forte crescendo leading up to forte and the use of sixteen notes in the bass notes the section intense and bright. Bar sixteen the end of the first section is repeated and ends on an Imperfect five of five going to five cadence called atomization. The second section of the piece is a development of A, which Is the same melody played a fifth up.The Antecedent started from the pickup beat to the first beat of bar three on a five of three going to a three cadence. The piece then modulated to D major in the next bar then f# minor in bar 30 then back to b minor in bar thirty two. There is a phrase extension starting on the second beat of bar twenty to the first beat of bar twenty eight. The same idea comes back again of the melody line taking the rhythm of the bass line and the bass line taken the rhythm of the melody line in bars went eight to thirty two. There are pedal points in bars 33 to 35, interesting to note that there is use of octaves. In bars thirty six the first beat has a loud dynamic marking and the second beat has a soft dynamic marking which is quite interesting. There is a crescendo in the next bar leading up to forte towards the second to last bar. This section is then repeated and the section time around there is a rite. 2 Volta Inch means turn around then retard the second time. The piece ends on a Perfect Authentic Cadence.

A Great Civil War Hero and a Great Military Commander Whose Name is Case Study - 1

A Great Civil War Hero and a Great Military Commander Whose Name is Hiram Ulysses Simpson Grant - Case Study Example Grant is a complex man (Bartholomees, 2002, p. 133) filled with great contradictions. Drain, the executive producer of American Experience describes him as a man hailed from an educated family, yet a school bus; a man who hates violence and the sight of blood, yet had been a brutal commander (cited in Lasner, 2002, p. 20). A man devoid of any qualities of greatness yet had saved and united this nation. A man of constant failure yet in his not so distinct previous military career had earned President Lincoln’s trust and confidence against the opposition of many, had been able to tame and discipline the seemingly hopeless rowdy Illinois regimen, and had defeated Robert E. Lee’s forces, victoriously ending the bloody Southern rebellion (Goode, 1999, p. 330; Lasner, 2002, p. 20). An honest man yet his administration were best known for many scandals involving his own people – his secretary of war (William Belknap) and private secretary (Gen. Orville Babcock). Among t he major scandals that smeared his term were the Black Friday (September 24, 1869), Whiskey Ring (1875), and Belknap Bribery (1876). (Toppin, 2002, pp. 244-246) Also, a child of the frontier, a drunkard and a stern military commander, yet rarely swears using only the oath ‘doggone it’ and acts with ‘girlish modesty’. According to him, â€Å"no one had seen him naked since he was a boy.† (Goode, 1999, p.330) Civil War brought success to Grant from being a war hero to the White House, becoming the 18th and youngest US President serving two terms (1869-1877).

There is no set topic Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 9

There is no set topic - Essay Example In particular, a representation of nature and America is perceived in the ‘self’ under his possession and by rhetorical naming, he enumerates acquaintances of humans and dispositions at the aim of making recognition to their worth by way of contributing to be part of his formation. Seemingly he puts this in a resonance that as he takes part of what others are, equivalently, his existence shares to them a part of himself. No matter how large and distinct the external world is and the other human beings outside of the individual self, Whitman persuades the readers to find the essence in collectiveness as bearing impact upon the singleness of a person. Just like a ‘self’ with a soul of its own, the collective co-existences surrounding form a network to the self so if seen as a whole, the collection is seen as one with a singular soul that discerns every part of itself as every part is the self making up the breathing union. As he tries to raise a political stand on describing a ‘democratic self’, Whitman admits at having undergone a struggle of remaining part of a whole while invoking the freedom to acquire an identity which by nature stands different or unique compared with the rest. In an attempt to draw upon a comprehension that would appeal to the greatest number, he humbly exemplifies his inability to answer a child’s basic query of what a grass is. On admitting that his level of knowledge is nowhere above that of the innocent’s Walt alludes how complex it is to figure a self in democracy yet in harmony with the other selves that altogether fit in the union that exudes out connectedness. Emotionally stating ‘Or I guess the grass is itself a child, the produced babe of
